Two men – Chris Finill from Cranleigh, Surrey and Steve Pope from Sheffield – are currently attempting an epic 3,000 mile run across America, from San Francisco to New York, to raise £10,000 for the charity ‘Help for Heroes’.

The two have been sponsored by rhw solicitors in Guildford, which is where Chris’s wife Julia has worked for the last year. Julia is on the trip with them providing back up support and driving the support vehicle.

Chris and Steve started their transcontinental run in mid-August and have braved temperatures of 110 degrees Fahrenheit in the Nevada desert. They are now closing in on the Rockies in Colorado as they attempt the journey of a lifetime. Neither of them are strangers to long distance running. Chris has been a competitive runner since the age of 12 and is the only person to have run all 31 London marathons in under three hours – a feat recognised the Guinness Book of Records.

Commenting on their attempt, Chris said:

“We are so grateful to rhw solicitors and our other sponsors for making this trip possible for us. We wanted to run coast to coast – starting by running out of the Pacific Ocean and finishing by plunging headlong into the Atlantic. We also wanted to link two iconic cities – San Francisco and New York. Given the timing of our run, the New York marathon on November 6th 2011 makes the perfect ending and San Francisco is the ideal starting point from the West Coast.”

“Our route is 3,067 miles, but no doubt there will be a few unexpected detours if Steve does any of the map reading! We hope to complete the run in less than 80 days, averaging around 40 miles per day.
